The Gillam Building project demonstrates how the adaptive reuse of an existing structure can create dynamic, meaningful spaces that support both community and function. Originally a nearly 100-year-old building, it has been reimagined into a vibrant, collegiate environment that blends heritage character with modern learning needs.

Designed as a hub for Year 5 and 6 students, the building offers a sophisticated, “grown-up” atmosphere that mirrors their transition to secondary school. Through extensive stakeholder engagement including staff, students, and leadership the design process adopted a “backwards design” approach, ensuring every space was purpose-built to align with the school’s inquiry-led pedagogy and evolving curriculum.

The ground floor supports the bespoke Year 6 DARE Diploma program, encouraging collaboration and independence through interconnected learning commons and breakout areas. The first-floor fosters creativity and focused study with light-filled spaces, quiet nooks, and flexible zones that invite students to gather, share ideas, and engage in self-directed learning.

The refurbishment respected the building’s historic fabric while overcoming structural challenges and integrating accessibility improvements, such as a new raised linkway connecting the hub to the wider campus. Modern features including circadian lighting, integrated technology, and collegiate finishes balance contemporary function with comfort.

Central to its success is the way the Gillam Building has become a communal heart for senior primary students. By uniting previously separated classrooms, it promotes shared experiences, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging. The transformation has enhanced student engagement, behaviour, and wellbeing, reflecting the value of well-designed, adaptable spaces that celebrate heritage while supporting modern needs.

This project illustrates how reimagining an existing building can deliver both practical outcomes and powerful places for connection.
